Prospectors flocked to this barren Outback region, 600km east of Perth, when rich gold deposits were discovered near Kalgoorlie in 1893. The area still produces nickel and gold. The city of Kalgoorlie and its smaller neighbour, Boulder, contain fine old buildings, the Museum of the Goldfields, the Hannans North Historic Mining Reserve, and a Royal Flying Doctor base. The nearby, well-preserved ghost town of Coolgardie is also worth a visit.
