HEALTH

MEDICAL INSURANCE
Private medical insurance is recommended. Visitors from non-European Union countries can receive treatment in a hospital emergency room but are charged if admitted to a hospital (hôpital/ziekenhuis).

DENTAL SERVICES
Dental treatment is not available free of charge; all dentists practice privately. A list of dentists (dentiste/tandarts) can be found in the yellow pages (pages jaunes/beroepenlijst). Check that dental treatment is covered by your private medical insurance.

SUN ADVICE
The warmest months are July and August, with average daytime temperatures of 60°F. Belgian weather can be unpredictable and although the sun is not often very fierce, protection is still required.

DRUGS
Prescription and nonprescription medicines are available from a pharmacy (pharmacie/apotheek). If you need a medicine outside regular hours, the addresses of 24-hour facilities are posted on the door of all pharmacies.

SAFE WATER
Tap water is safe to drink and mineral water (eau minérale/mineraalwater) is widely available. The origin of the English word “spa” is in fact the Belgian town of Spa, especially popular during the 19th century for its mineral springs.
