Introduction

Belgium is a young country in terms of “old” Europe. Its name derives from a prehistoric tribe, the Belgae, but there is no racial or cultural link with such a distant past. The country has been in the melting pot of European history for centuries and only achieved true national identity in 1830. Yet nowhere else on the Continent will you be so close to such a powerful sense of European history.
