NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION

TRAIN (train/trein)
The national rail network is the SNCB/NMBS (Societé Nationale des Chemins de Fer Belges in French, and Nationale Maatschappij der Belgische Spoorwegen in Flemish). It runs an efficient system with many special deals on fares. Reservations can only be made for international journeys; Phone:02 555 2555 (national calls) or 02 528 2828 (if calling from outside Belgium). The Eurostar trains from London arrive in the Gare du Midi (telephone numbers as above). Brussels has good connections with the Thalys network that operates high-speed trains to Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne and Geneva (Phone:0900 10177).

BUS (bus/bus)
Local bus service is good, although there are few international long-distance buses. Details are available at tourist offices. Open the door yourself on buses and trams; where there is no handle, press the black strip or button. International Eurolines buses operate in Belgium (Phone:01582 404 511).
