HEALTH

MEDICAL INSURANCE
Private insurance is recommended. Visitors can receive treatment in emergency rooms but are charged if admitted to a hospital. You can seek advice from a doctor at a surgery or health center; you must make an appointment, and a charge will be made. Doctors are listed in the yellow pages, or ask at your hotel or a tourist office.

DENTAL SERVICES
Dentists charge for consultations or treatment. Emergency treatment is available out of hours in towns and cities (see the yellow pages). Check if it is covered by your medical insurance.

SUN ADVICE
Although not renowned for warm weather, Britain does have its moments, and it is not unheard of for July and August to be as hot as the Mediterranean. Visiting historic sights can involve being outside for prolonged periods, so cover up, apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

DRUGS
Prescription and nonprescription medicines are available from pharmacies (chemists). Pharmacists can advise on medication for common ailments. Notices in all pharmacy windows give details of emergency facilities open outside regular hours.

SAFE WATER
Tap water is safe to drink, even in remote areas. Mineral water is widely available but is usually quite expensive, particularly in restaurants.
