From Oxford to the Lakes

North and west of London, in the counties of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire, are such cities as Oxford, university town par excellence, matched only by its rival Cambridge in the fen country of eastern England. Here, too, you will find the Cotswold Hills and the historic town of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Progress through the cultural heart of England is not an idyllic rural journey by any means. Yet the cities of Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Liverpool are vibrant and exciting places, while historic cities such as Chester, on the Welsh Borders, and York in the east have managed to preserve their medieval townscapes. Beyond this great sprawl an unspoiled England survives. Derbyshire's Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, the exquisite Lake District of Cumbria and the lonely heights of Northumbria seem to appear like magic in the landscape.
