Protected by Sea
Britain's island location has protected it from invasion over the centuries. The country has experienced two definitive “invasions,”
by the Romans in the first century and by the Normans in 1066. Others tried their best. The Danes, or Vikings, steadily occupied
eastern England during the ninth century but were later repulsed. The Anglo Saxons did not invade in the sense of armed occupation,
but rather by a slow and steady immigration and integration after Roman withdrawal left chaos and uncertainty within the country.
In later centuries Britain developed a powerful military and naval force, and although almost constantly at war with various
European powers during the medieval period was itself never invaded. In more recent times both Napoleon and Hitler tried and
failed to conquer. The English Channel and the surrounding seas have been Britain's greatest strategic blessing.
