The Tàpies Foundation was founded by Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies in 1984 to promote the study and understanding of modern art. It is housed in the former Montaner i Simon publishing house, built by Lluis Domènech i Montaner between 1880 and 1889, an unusual building that is considered the initiator of the Modernist movement. The striking Mudejar-style façade is crowned by an eye-catching tangle of wire and tubing by Tàpies, entitled Cloud and Chair (1990). Inside, there is an exhaustive library documenting art and artists of the 20th century, and one of the most complete collections of Tàpies' own works.
