Monestir De Pedralbes and Collecció Thyssen-Bornemisza
( Highly Recommended ) The monastery of Pedralbes was founded by King Jaume II and Queen Elisenda de Montcada in 1326 to accommodate nuns of the St Clare of Assisi order. Following the king's death in 1327, Elisenda spent the last 37 years of her life here. The spacious, three-storey cloisters - one of the architectural jewels of Barcelona - are still used by the Clarista nuns. Step inside and it is hard to believe you are just a short bus-ride from frenetic downtown Barcelona. From here, there is access to the refectory, the chapter house, the Queen's grave and St Michael's cell, with its remarkable wall murals. Recently, Baron von Thyssen-Bornemisza donated part of his priceless art collection to the monastery, with 79 works housed in two former dormitories - mostly 13th- to 18th-century Italian and German paintings, including works by Fra Angélico, Lucas Cranach, Velázquez and Rubens .
