Museu D'art Modern - Mnac
( Highly Recommended ) The Museum of Modern Art shares a wing of the imposing Palau de la Ciutadella, with the Parliament of Catalonia, on the far side of the Parc de la Ciutadella. Its collections follow on from those of the National Museum of Catalan Art, completing a period spanning the 11th to 20th centuries, and are devoted to Catalan art from the mid-19th century to around 1930. The collection starts with works by Maria Fortuny, the earliest of the Modernistas and the first Catalan artist to be known widely abroad, and friends Ramon Casas, whose work once hung on the walls of Els Quatre Gats, and Santiago Rusinyol. However, the highlight of the museum is, without doubt, its decorative arts collection: jewellery, textiles, stained glass, ironwork, sculptures, ceramics and painted screens by Homar, Puig I Cadafalch and Gaudí, among others. The extravagance of Modernisme was succeeded by the less adventurous Noucentisme movement, which attempted to reintroduce the more harmonious values of Classical and Mediterranean art, epitomised by the works of Casanovas and Sunyer. The fascinating exhibition draws to a close with a series of striking avant-garde sculptures by Gargallo and Juli González, dating from the 1920s and 30s.
