Port Vell

( Highly Recommended )

Although Barcelona was founded on sea-going tradition, for many years its seafront was in decay, until a major redevelopment prior to the 1992 Olympics reintegrated the Port Vell (Old Port) into the city by transforming it into a lively new entertainment venue. The Rambla de Mar, a series of undulating wooden walkways and bridges, acts as an extension of La Rambla, connecting the city to Port Vell's many new attractions.
Maremagnum, Port Vell's biggest crowd puller, is a covered shopping and entertainment centre with smart boutiques, expensive restaurants, trendy bars, discos and fast-food joints. Adjacent to the conventional cinema complex, IMAX, the 'cinema of the future', shows spectacular films in three dimensions, with state-of-the-art wrap-around screens and sound. Near by, the Aquarium, one of the biggest and best in Europe, always proves popular with children.
Take a Golondrina (pleasure boat) for a different perspective of the new harbour developments. The luxurious leisure marina with over 400 berths in the previously derelict dockyard area is rapidly becoming one of the Mediterranean's most exclusive anchorages. Although the big ferries to the Balearics still depart from here, most commercial activity now takes place in the modern port further down the coast.
