Casa Milà

( Highly Recommended )

Known locally as La Pedrera (the quarry), Spain's most controversial apartment block and Antoni Gaudí's last and most famous secular building was built between 1906 and 1912 and shows this great Catalan architect at his most inventive. It also shows Gaudí's genius as a structural engineer, with seven storeys built entirely on columns and arches, supposedly without a single straight line or right-angled corner. Its most distinctive features are the rippling limestone façade, with its intricate ironwork, and the strangely shaped chimneys of the roof terrace.
After years of neglect, Casa Milà was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1984, and purchased by the Caixa Catalunya Foundation, which has invested over €48 million to restore it to its original glory.
