10 Santa Maria del Mar
Barcelona's seaside cathedral is a Gothic triumph, built to demonstrate Catalan supremacy in Mediterranean commerce. The 14th-century church of Santa Maria del Mar (St Mary of the Sea) is located at the heart of La Ribera (The Waterfront), the medieval city's maritime and trading district. This neighbourhood's link with the sea dates back to the 10th century, when a settlement grew up along the seashore outside the city walls, around a chapel called Santa Maria de les Arenes (St Mary of the Sands). During the 13th century, the settlement grew and became known as Vilanova de Mar. Its identity was eventually firmly established with the transformation of the tiny chapel into the magnificent church of Santa Maria del Mar, built on what was then the seashore, as a show of maritime wealth and power. Indeed, the foundation stone commemorated the Catalan conquest of Sardinia. The church was built between 1329 and 1384 and has a purity of style that makes it one of the finest examples of Barcelona's Gothic heritage. The plain exterior is characterised by predominantly horizontal lines and two octagonal, flat-roofed towers. Inside, the wide, soaring nave and high, narrow aisles, all supported by slim, octagonal columns, provide a great sense of spaciousness. Sadly, the ornaments of the side chapels were lost when the city was besieged, once by Bourbon troops in 1714 and again during the Spanish Civil War. The resulting bareness of the interior, apart from the sculpture of a 15th-century ship that sits atop the altar, enables you to admire the church's striking simplicity without distraction.Address: Plaça de Santa Maria Phone: 93 310 23 90 Open: Daily 9-1:30, 4:30-8 Bus: 14, 17, 40, 45, 51, 57, 59, 64, 157 Metro: Barceloneta, Jaume I Accessible: Good Admission: Free Other: Museu Picasso; Palau de Mar |
