Introduction
Barcelona, the capital of the autonomous Spanish region of Catalonia (Catalunya), is one of the Mediterranean's most vibrant
cities. Catalonia is Spain's leading economic region, the most innovative and prosperous area of the country, with a proud
history, an independent spirit and a strong sense of identity.
In 1975 King Juan Carlos restored Catalonia's status as an autonomous region, which marked the beginning of Barcelona's renaissance.
The pride and self-confidence engendered by a thriving economy and urban renewal culminated in the Barcelona Olympic Games
of 1992. Since then, the city has continued to forge ahead. With its 2,000-year-old history, exhilarating atmosphere and superb
architecture from nearly every age, it can't fail to please.
