Berlin Flavors
Music and Cabaret Store of the West Berlin Classicism |
Music and Cabaret In the 1920s Berlin had a reputation for “divine decadence,” as portrayed in the 1972 film Cabaret. The cabaret tradition has been revived, albeit in a milder form, and there are clubs all over the city; there also are folk, jazz and other music venues. For the latest details consult Berlin Tut Gut (from tourist offices), which has English-language listings, or the Berlin Das Magazin (Berlin - The Magazine, published three times a year). The busiest district for entertainment is in Scheunenviertel. The Berlin Philharmonic, perhaps the world's best-known orchestra, has its home at the Philharmonie, in the Kulturforum, a complex of concert halls and museums near Potsdamer Strasse. The Berlin Symphony Orchestra performs in the 19th-century Konzerthaus Berlin (Berlin Concert House), at Gendarmenmarkt. Berlin's oldest opera house (built 1743) is the Staatsoper (State Opera), a fine baroque concert hall on Unter den Linden - its glittering list of past directors includes Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. |
