Berlin Flavors
Music and Cabaret Store of the West Berlin Classicism |
Store of the West One of Europe's biggest department stores - second only to Harrods of London - is found in Berlin: the KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens, or Store of the West), on Tauentzienstrasse, is open Mon.-Fri. 10-8, Sat. 9:30-8. A branch of the Paris flagship, Galeries Lafayette, is on Friedrichstrasse, near the designer shops on the same street. In the leisure and shopping complex Europa-Center, not far from KaDeWe, there are 99 stores, cafés and bars. Berlin porcelain makes a perfect souvenir. It's been produced here since 1763, when the Royal Porcelain Factory (K.P.M.; for tours call 030 390 090) opened, and the factory's main store is on the Ku'damm. Street markets flourish in this city; on weekends try Tiergarten, Am Zeughaus or John F.-Kennedy-Platz, and the popular Saturday morning Winterfeldtmarkt on Winterfeldtplatz is a lively affair. |
