Unter den Linden

Unter den Linden

(Under the Lime Trees) was laid out in 1648 as a route to the Tiergarten. It runs from the Brandenburg Gate to Museum Island and the river, and is lined with baroque and neoclassic buildings. The 1695 Zeughaus (Arsenal) houses the Deutsches Historisches Museum (German History Museum). An equestrian statue of Frederick the Great at the eastern end was turned by the Communist regime to ride toward the East rather than the West.
