Bauhaus-Archiv

After World War I Walter Gropius founded an architectural movement in Weimar, stressing function above beauty and encouraging collaboration between art and industry. The Bauhaus (Building House) school greatly influenced 20th-century design, but was condemned by the Nazis and eventually closed in Berlin in 1933. The Gropius-designed Bauhaus-Archiv (Bauhaus Archive), built in 1979, shows examples of the style - from chairs to models of buildings - and explains the aims of the Bauhaus artists.
