Museumsinsel

The first of a group of imposing museum buildings was begun on an island in the Spree river in 1830. In 1841, Frederick William IV designated the area a “space for art and science,” and now many of Berlin's antiquities, dispersed during World War II, are being brought together for display in the complex. Altes Museum (Old Museum) was restored after its destruction in 1943. It is being stocked with ancient sculpture and art, as is the Pergamonmuseum, whose main exhibit is the 52-foot Pergamon Altar, from a 164 BC royal temple in Bergama, Turkey. The Bode Museum (closed until Oct. 2006) displays medieval sculpture, art and coins, while 19th-century German art is in the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery). The Neues Museum (New Museum) presents the history of humankind; it is currently being restored and is scheduled to reopen in 2010.
