Schloss Charlottenburg

When work started on the Schloss Charlottenburg (Charlottenburg Palace) in 1695, it was designed as a rural home for Sophie-Charlotte, wife of the future King Frederick I of Prussia. Over the next 100 years it grew into a sprawling palace with royal apartments, dazzling rooms such as the White Hall and Golden Gallery, and gardens in formal French and landscaped English style, sloping down toward the Spree river.
