Finding Your Way
A City of Canals Cosmopolitan Tastes Lace, Chocolate and Music |
A City of Canals A few steps south of the Burg, along the narrow alley known as Blind Donkey Street (Blinde Ezelstraat), will bring you to the colonnaded fish market, a lively scene Tuesday to Saturday mornings. From here proceed right to Huidenvettersplein, and then along Rosary Quay (Rozenhoedkaai) to the Dijver, a pretty, tree-lined walkway running alongside the canal. There is a splendid complex of museum buildings here, including the Groeningemuseum, with a wonderful collection of paintings by the Flemish Primitives, the Gruuthusemuseum, which displays decorative arts, and the Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk). Across the road from the church is the Hans Hemling Museum which occupies a medieval hospital. Nearby is the old Beguinage (Begynhof), and from there you can explore the city's ancient walls and gates. The many canals lend Bruges the nickname “the Venice of the north.” |
