Begijnhof
The Begijnhof (Beguinage) complex, a wonderful testimony to a more sedate, spiritual age, has retained its tranquil atmosphere.
It was founded in 1245 to accommodate pious single women, many of them lace makers, who lived reclusive lives. These inhabitants,
known as Beguines, abandoned the complex in the 1920s, but Benedictine nuns later settled in the Beguinage and still live
here today. The 17th-century cottages surround a peaceful square. You can visit the Begijnhuisje (Beguine's House), a museum
house that has old-style furnishings and a delightful little cloister. The Begijnhof Church of St. Elizabeth has a simple
grace.
