Belfort

Bruges' famous medieval Belfort (Belfry) dominates the Markt. You can reach the top of the 289-foot tower by climbing the 366 steps. Ascending it is a challenge but every step will be memorable. You may marvel at the vast number of bricks and the tons of mortar holding everything together, including the 27 tons that the 47-bell carillon weighs. Just below the belfry is the chamber contain ing the clock mechanism and copper carillon drum. The bells ring out at each quarter hour. You have time to watch the ingenious system whir and click into life, like some great mechanical beast, before the final short climb to the belfry to enjoy the melodic, and surprisingly muted, peals and to take in the stunning view.
