Markt

The Markt (Market Square) is the bustling heart of Bruges. The Gothic buildings of the Provinciaal Hof, seat of the government of West Flanders, and the adjoining Central Post Office dominate the east side of the impressive square. The Belfry stands on the south side. The crow-stepped gables of a row of old guild houses, now painted in bright colors, catch the sun on the north side of the square. They stand behind a statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, Flemish heroes who led a 1302 uprising against French overlordship. The west side of the Markt has a mix of handsome buildings, including the 15th-century Maison Bouchoute and the Craenenburg House (now the Café Craenenburg) flanking the entrance to Sint Amandstraat.
