Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk

The Gothic gloom of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady) is emphasized by mournful piped music. Notices exhorting stilte (silence) will keep you suitably hushed. Even Michelangelo's masterful sculpture the Madonna and Child seems constrained within the cold prison of its marble altar. Yet the church's powerful sense of sanctity and its outstanding works of sacred art overpower the initial feeling of gloominess. The pulpit, designed by Bruges artist Jan Antoon Garemijn, is a marvelous rococo extravaganza that will cheer you on your way to the choir and the magnificent, gilded Renaissance mausoleums of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold.
