Medieval Townscape

Historic Brussels is celebrated by the breathtaking Grand' Place (Grote Markt), the best-preserved medieval townscape in Europe. North of here you will find the rue des Bouchers area, where narrow cobbled streets are lined with competing restaurants more reminiscent of Mediterranean cities. Nearby are the elegant, glass-roofed shopping malls of the 19th-century Galeries St.-Hubert.

A short distance west of Grand' Place, along rue au Beurre, is the massive neoclassical Bourse, the city's stock exchange, its front facing busy boulevard Anspach. Nearby is rue Neuve, a lively shopping street. Head west from boulevard Anspach and discover Brussels' very old heartland of place St.-Géry, with its covered market, and place Ste.-Cathérine and place du Béguinage, old cobbled squares with slightly worn but still splendid baroque churches. Between St.-Géry and Ste.-Cathérine lies rue Antoine Dansaert, a street featuring chic clothing stores.
