| What To See Budapest Budapest + Buda Pest + Pest Sights Excursions + Excursions Walk/Drive Food&Drink In The Know Did You Know? 'The Danube separates the two cities, in other respects one. Pest
It is said, perhaps unfairly, that when Pest wants to sleep it goes to Buda. The silt of the Danube piles up on the Buda side, while a swift current runs along the Pest bank. Pest is the commercial and entertainment hub of the city, and there's little sleep in this part of Budapest, which thrives on a tradition of music, good food, and a tireless night life. Pest has most of the best attractions, the restaurants, and the best hotels. It also has the best shopping. Laid out largely during the 19th century on the Paris pattern of boulevards and straight avenues, this is the only similarity to the French capital. Ravaged by successive wars and conflicts, Pest has grown into a city of delightful eclectic uniqueness. Its tenacious sense of history and grandeur is apparent everywhere, especially in its architecture which ranges from shabby, almost derelict eloquence, to glorious sumptuousness. Buda might taunt Pest with its regal ambience, but Pest quite definitely is the more exciting. |
