Introduction | Introduction Until the 19th century, two communities faced each other across the Danube. Royal, medieval Buda, with its majestic architecture, stood on the hilly western bank; and modern Pest, a flat area of busy boulevards, was on the east bank. Then the Chain Bridge (Széchenyi lánchíd) was built and Budapest, “Queen of the Danube,” was created, linking the western and eastern landscapes of Hungary: the green uplands behind Buda, and the flat fields of the Great Plain beyond Pest. |
