Gross St. Martin

From its consecration in 1172 until the 19th century, the church of Gross St. Martin was the most distinctive feature of Cologne's skyline. Its tower, with four turrets at the corners, makes an interesting contrast to the lacy stonework of the cathedral's spires. Originally this was a monastery church, built for Benedictine monks from Ireland and Scotland.
