Römisch-Germanisches Museum

For hundreds of years Cologne was under Roman rule; city status was granted in AD 50 by Emperor Claudius. The Römisch-Germanisches Museum (Roman-Germanic Museum) depicts daily life in the Roman Empire through locally excavated items. The main exhibit is the astonishing 230 foot Dionysus Mosaic, once part of a third-century Roman villa: it shows Dionysus, god of wine, indulging in drunken revelry. An older exhibit is the 49-foot-high tomb of a legionnaire called Poblicius, who died about AD 40. There's a display of third- and fourth-century glass designs from Cologne, as well as a collection of jewelry found at Frankish burial sites.
