Introduction

Denmark was the cradle of ancient Scandinavia. Talk of the first Vikings and you talk of Danes. It was from this fragmented mosaic of peninsulas and islands between mainland Europe and the Swedish-Norwegian landmass that those consummate seamen first struck out in search of plunder and new territory. Denmark is the smallest of the four Scandinavian nations, yet the Danes have made their country one of the most advanced and progressive in the world.
