Danish Archipelago

The Kingdom of Denmark is just over 200 miles long, and the Jutland peninsula (the primary landmass) is only 75 miles wide. Nowhere in Denmark is much higher than 100 feet above sea level, and the country's highest point - Yding Skovhøj in central Jutland - is only 567 feet in elevation. Jutland's narrow southern border is with Germany; its west coast adjoins the North Sea.

East of Jutland, and with barely a sliver of water in between, is Denmark's second-largest island, Funen (Fyn). East of Funen is Zealand (Sjælland), the largest island, its northeastern edge a stone's throw from the Swedish coast, and home to the capital, Copenhagen (København). Zealand and Funen lie like natural fortresses across the Kattegat, the channel separating Denmark from Sweden. This strategic position across the entrance to the Baltic Sea has always placed the country at the maritime heart of northern Europe.
