Kilmainham Gaol
The notorious Kilmainham Gaol (prison) has been the scene of great misery. Kilmainham opened in 1796 and until 1924 when it
closed, just about every famous name in the struggle for Irish independence and statehood was a “guest” at one time. They
included Robert Emmet, Charles Stewart Parnell and Eamon DeValera. Fourteen leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were executed
in the prison yard. Explore the warren of gloomy cells and chilly corridors. Guided tours give a graphic picture of Irish
history.
