Exploring Edinburgh

The best way to explore Edinburgh is on foot. You need to do this to experience the true feel of the city, for no bus will transport you down the narrow medieval closes of old Edinburgh or through the quiet and spacious residential streets of the New Town. Go where your fancy takes you and discover the hidden corners which do so much to make this one of Europe's truly great cities.

Unlike many capitals, Edinburgh is small enough to allow you to do this, though you may want to take a bus before starting your day's wanderings, and a taxi at the end of a footsore day, when the fact that Edinburgh is a hilly city is only too apparent. Concentrate on one area at a time - this is easy to do with the city so conveniently divided into the Old and New Towns. Spend time too, venturing out from the centre to Stockbridge, Duddingston, sea-shore Cramond and the buzzing waterfront areas of Leith. They all have their own characteristics and charm, as well as tourist sights which you won't want to miss. Explore Edinburgh's parks, too, for few other cities can boast such a variety, from the genuine countryside of Holyrood Park to the manicured lawns and bright flowerbeds of the Royal Botanic Garden.
As in any large city, Edinburgh has its poorer areas, especially on the big outer estates; they're best avoided by visitors, as are the Meadows and dockside Leith at night.
