Gardens

At first sight central Edinburgh seems rich in gardens, the New Town dotted with numerous green spaces amidst its squares and circuses. Sadly, these are all private and locked, keys being held by the owners of the surrounding properties. You can peer through the railings at these virtually empty gardens and enjoy them from a distance only. Head instead for Princes Street Gardens and join the crowds of locals and visitors enjoying the colourful and immaculate flower beds. In the Old Town, you'll find Dunbar's Close Garden just off the bottom of the Canongate. This little-known 17th-century-style garden, trimly planted with box hedges and bright flowers, is a real refuge from the unrelenting cobbles of the Royal Mile. More tranquil still are some of Edinburgh's historic cemeteries, Greyfriars being the most peaceful of all.
