Accommodation Grading The Scottish Tourist Board operates a grading system for every type of accommodation available in Scotland. Hotels, guest houses, bed-and-breakfast establishments and other types of tourist accommodation are inspected annually and awarded anything from 1 to 5 stars. Stars are awarded on the basis of the facilities offered and are displayed on a blue plaque with a thistle symbol outside the property. Self-catering If you're planning to stay outside Edinburgh and travel in daily to enjoy the city, it's worth considering renting self-catering accommodation. You could find yourself staying in anything from an idyllic cottage to the wing of a castle. Even in Edinburgh itself, there are self-catering options on offer. The Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board publishes full details of self-catering options in its annual accommodation guide and also provides a booking service. Guesthouses, Hotels and B & Bs Edinburgh has a huge number of both guest houses and small family-run hotels. The essential difference between guest houses and hotels is that the latter will be a little larger, have more rooms with private facilities and will be licensed. If you are looking for something more personal, B&Bs are ideal. They offer a higher standard of comfort and give you the chance to sample some wonderful Scottish breakfasts, complete with home-made porridge, oatcakes and black pudding. |
