First Impressions

Most visitors arrive by train at Waverley Station. From the station you emerge onto Waverley Bridge and get an immediate first impression of the city's visual drama. The castle and the dark soaring back walls of the buildings that enclose the Royal Mile rise to the south like extensions of the cliffs of Castle Rock. To the north is Princes Street. Here, the Scott Monument, a towering Gothic steeple, dominates one view; the bulk of the Balmoral Hotel, itself castle-like, dominates the other. These buildings are spectacularly illuminated at night.

From Waverley Bridge you can take an instant Guide Friday open-top bus tour that will introduce you to the city. Details about city transportation are available from the Edinburgh Traveline office, which is diagonally opposite the south end of Waverley Bridge, at the corner of Cockburn and Market streets. Next door is The Hub, Edinburgh's Festival Centre. You can also find out about various other guided tours from the Edinburgh tourist information center on Princes Street, only a minute or so from Waverley Station. They include historical walking tours and highly entertaining Ghost or Witchery tours that take you through the Old Town's maze of historic lanes and courtyards.
