Two Edinburghs Life in Edinburgh Greyfriars Bobby |
Greyfriars Bobby This Skye terrier's devotion to his dead master is enshrined in Edinburgh folklore. The famous Greyfriars Bobby was a trained police dog who worked with his master, Constable John Gray, guarding livestock at Edinburgh's city market, the Grassmarket, during the 1850s. When Gray died at age 45 he was buried in Greyfriars churchyard, and his devoted terrier took up what began a 14-year vigil by his grave. Bobby was cared for and beloved by everyone in the neighborhood. A statue of Greyfriars Bobby stands at the junction of Candlemaker Row and the George IV Bridge, near the church gate and opposite a pub named after the faithful hound. |
