Calton Hill

Calton Hill, at the east end of Princes Street, is crowned with neoclassic buildings that have earned Edinburgh the nickname “The Athens of the North,” but their dark stonework hardly matches the bare, bright brilliance of the Parthenon or the Temple of the Winds. There are great views of Princes Street, Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat from this hilltop, as well as Holyrood Park and the Salisbury Crag. You can also climb the 143 steps of the tall monument to Admiral Horatio Nelson for an even better view from its top. Note: This site should be avoided at dusk and after dark.
