Holyrood Park

Few cities are blessed with such a marvelous open space as Holyrood Park, or Queen's Park, as it is also known. The park is dominated by the dramatic Salisbury Crags and by Arthur's Seat, a high, rounded hill. You can enter the park from the bottom of the Royal Mile, just beyond the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The park's high ground is encircled by a public road, the Queen's Drive, but the area is better enjoyed on foot. A broad, slanting path slices up the slopes below Salisbury Crags. It takes you high above the city, and the views are outstanding. Arthur's Seat can also be climbed, but it is a challenging hike; hiking boots are recommended. However, you can keep to the low ground of the park and still enjoy the splendid sights.
