National Gallery of Scotland
The National Gallery is a large, 19th-century neoclassic building with a good selection from all periods, including the splendid
Trinity Altarpiece, by Hugo van der Goes, and the seductive Venus Anadyomene, by Titian. Most of the major names in 17th-century
European art are represented; there are some fine landscapes by Claude Lorrain and Nicholas Poussin's Seven Sacraments is
on view. There is a powerful work by Frederick Edwin Church, Niagara Falls from the American Side. Scottish painting is well
represented by Gavin Hamilton and Allan Ramsay. Look for Edinburgh Castle and the Nor' Loch, by Alexander Nasmyth, for some
idea of what Old Edinburgh looked like before the Nor' Loch was drained and replaced by Princes Street Gardens. Sir Henry
Raeburn's The Rev. Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch and Sir George Harvey's The Curlers are wonderfully lively and
very typical Scottish narrative works.
