Palace of Holyroodhouse
Queen Elizabeth II's official residence in Scotland, ancient Holyroodhouse was part of the Abbey of Holyrood, but much of
the present palace was built for King Charles II. The severe neoclassicism of the courtyard block reflects the distinctly
English fashion of the time; nevertheless it exudes Scottish history. The State Apartments of Charles' palace are luxurious
and grand, crammed with artifacts and paintings elegantly displayed beneath superb stucco ceilings. Deep in the Historical
Apartments is the bedchamber of Mary, Queen of Scots and the adjoining closet where, in 1566, her secretary and confidante,
David Rizzio, was stabbed to death by associates of the Queen's delinquent husband, Lord Darnley. You can view the palace
by guided tour only, but you'll be in the hands of highly entertaining and knowledgeable staff. The Queen's Gallery, in an
adjacent building, has changing exhibitions of art from the Royal collections.
