St. Giles' Cathedral
St. Giles' Cathedral (or the High Kirk of Edinburgh) is the seat of Scotland's Presbyterian religion and a powerful feature
of the Royal Mile. The Kirk is an uneasy mix of medieval Gothic and Georgian Gothic, the latter grafted on in the early 19th
century; the interior reflects an enthusiastic Victorian restoration. There are some superb external features, including the
19th-century west door and the late medieval tower and spire, a dramatic sight on Edinburgh's skyline. Inside, St. Giles'
has many fine features and memorials. A 20th-century addition is the Thistle Chapel, built in 1911 as a private chapel for
the Knights of the Most Holy Order of the Thistle. Richly carved stonework enlivens the interior of the chapel, and the lierne
vaulting of the roof, with its carved bosses, is outstanding. Look near the entrance door for the tiny bagpipe-playing angel.
