Land of Forests and Lakes

Finland is bordered on the east by Russia, on the northwest by Sweden and on the north by Norway. Most of Finland is less than 600 feet high, and over 70 percent of the country supports coniferous spruce and pine. The northern areas are covered with peat bog, and there are almost 188,000 lakes and nearly 180,000 islands. All of Finland is a seemingly endless blanket of trees, water and wide skies.

The main “lake district” of Saimaa in the east is a paradise of woodland and navigable rivers and lakes, punctuated by rugged cliffs and a glittering mosaic of islands and lakeside towns and villages. Apart from the special nature of the Finnish landscape, the main cities and towns - Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Porvoo, Savonlinna, Oulu and Rovaniemi - have much to offer the visitor. They are as modern as any other European urban center, yet retain a deep-seated Finnish identity.
