Introduction
More than 3 million tourists annually visit Florence (Firenze), the capital of Tuscany, whose resident population is about
400,000. Visitors come with high expectations of beauty, stunning art, history and stylish people. Sadly, they are often so
overwhelmed by heat, crowds, noise and cultural overload that the city fails to live up to expectations. When touring Florence,
more so than most cities, planning pays off.
Choose the time you visit carefully. If art and architecture are the main purpose of your trip, try to come off-season, when
Florence is quieter and the heat in this largely non-air-conditioned city won't wipe you out. Be prepared for crowds, time
gallery visits for early and late in the day, and check opening times for museums and churches before you visit. Book accommodations
before you come, and don't plan to use Florence as a base for touring the rest of Tuscany.
