A Russian Romance The beautiful belle époque Château des Ollières, richly furnished and shaded by an acre of garden, is surely one of Nice's most romantic hotels. In the late 19th century, it belonged to Russian Prince Lobanov Rostowsky who, on being called back to Moscow to assume a position in the Russian government, gave it to his mistress as a gift of love. Converted into a luxury hotel in 1990, it still maintains the warm, homely feeling of a private mansion. Gordon Bennet! Hôtel La Réserve in Beaulieu-sur-Mer reached the height of its fame in 1887 when millionaire playboy James Gordon Bennet, owner of the New York Herald, was cast out from American society following some scandalous behaviour, and moved here to run the Paris edition of his paper from the hotel during the 1880s and 1890s. 'Tender is the Night' Many illustrious guests of the 1920s and 1930s stayed at the palatial fin de siècle Hôtel du Cap Eden Roc, including Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway and notorious American socialites F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, who personified the reckless hedonism of the Riviera. The hotel was the inspiration for Metro: Scott Fitzgerald's famous 'autobiographical novel' Tender is the Night. Eden Roc is still considered the most beautiful place for a swim on the whole Riviera, with today's guests including Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Hôtel de Paris Few hotels can claim as grand a clientele as Monte-Carlo's Hôtel de Paris. In the winter season of 1887 alone, its guests included the Emperor and Empress of Austria, the Dowager Empress of Russia, the Queen of Portugal and the Kings of Sweden and Serbia. The financier Sir Basil Zaharoff, one of the legendary few who have 'broken the bank' at the neighbouring Casino, took over the entire hotel for his stays, bringing his retinue of staff as well as china and cutlery. Now no-one feels the need to bring their own chef, as the restaurant is one of the most highly rated in the country; but crowned heads are less obvious and the Hôtel de Paris is exclusive only to those without the means to pay for its superior comforts and services. Mas de Chastelas Picture a traditional, pale-pink shuttered farmhouse, smothered in creeper, surrounded by some of the most cherished vineyards of the Côtes de Provence, and converted into an exclusive hideaway just outside St-Tropez. Add to this characterful rooms, beautifully decorated with gay Provençal fabrics, and exceptional regional cuisine - served by the pool in summer, and by a cosy log fire in winter. The guest list includes Depardieu, Belmondo and other French film idols - no wonder it is such perfection! |
