Black telephones have instructions in English, and most operators are bilingual. Increasingly fewer phones accept coins; most are operated by telephone cards (Telefonkarten), which can be bought at any post office. International calls can be made from any booth.

Phoning Germany from abroad
The country code for Germany is 49. Note that German numbers in this book do not include the country code; you will need to prefix this number if you are phoning from another country. To phone Germany from the United States or Canada, omit the first zero from the German number, and add the prefix 011 49. (Note that the number of digits in German area codes varies.) Example: 011 22 33 44 becomes 011 49 11 22 33 44.

To phone the United States or Canada from Germany, prefix the area code and number with 00 1. Example: 111 222-3333 becomes 00 1 111 222-3333. National information for Germany: dial 11833 To call international information dial 11834.
