Exploring the Area
It is often said that Ghent is situated between Bruges and Antwerp not only geographically but that it is also intermediate in character: Bruges, with its museums and celebrated for its medieval pomp; Antwerp a port city and metropolis. Ghent is a first-class centre from which to visit the rest of Belgium because it has good train services to the various Flemish towns. If you prefer to drive you will experience the luxury of driving on well-lit motorways during the evening and at night. Belgium is also the country most visible from the moon, to the great annoyance of environmental activists and astronomers. Ghent is surrounded by a green belt that is visible in good weather from the roof of St Baafskathedraal. The Leie meanders through an area of breathtaking natural beauty which was the base for many artists of the Latem School. The many castles and the picturesque villages along the Leie remind visitors of the Loire valley. You will long remember the colourful images of the flower nurseries. |
