A Walk to the Citadelpark

De Muink is the district between Koning Albertpark and the Opperschelde and it makes a peaceful approach to the St Pietersabdij and the Citadelpark. Woodrow Wilsonplein is the newest square in the city. Lovely houses perished to make way for a modern administrative centre and a shopping centre.

Turn left by the water on to the Muinkkaai.

From here you have a wonderful view of the monumental entrance to the concert hall of the Vooruit arts centre.

Turn left into Guldenpoortstraat and immediately take the right turn into Hertstraat.

Hertstraat cuts across a tangle of small streets and alleys, once so typical of industrial Ghent. At the end of this street is the Bernardparkje, the remains of a zoo, surrounded by chic burghers' houses.

Turn left by Bernardstraat and follow the steep path up the Kantienberg.

Now you are looking down on the back of the vineyards of the St Pietersabdij, worth a small detour and a visit. Left from the bridge (made out of an industrial container) stands the cinema complex Decascoop, where in October you will see film stars wandering around during the Flanders Film Festival. The Rabot and a small piece of wall are remnants of the city walls and you can also see the Boekentoren from here. The Kantienberg crosses the Overpoortstraat, the student quarter where many litres of beer flow on Thursday evenings.

Keep straight on and follow the Kunstlaan.

The large building on the right hand side is a military base, where there has not been much activity since conscription was abolished. You are now looking straight into Citadelpark which contains the large art museums of the city, the sports complex De Kuipke, the congress centre and the botanical garden.
