Landscape of History
Northern, western and southern Hungary are different worlds. In the north, beyond the urban centers of Budapest and Miskolc,
are the uplands and their wide, rolling, forested hills. The vineyards here produce famous Tokay and Bull's Blood wine.
In the west there are strong links with Western European culture. The rich farmlands are punctuated with historic towns that
are packed with Renaissance and baroque buildings. In the south the landscape changes completely. Vast, flat grasslands form
the Great Plain (puszta), dotted with tiny farmsteads and presided over by the capital, Debrecen. In the far south, the medieval
city of Pécs preserves many relics of its 143 years under Turkish rule.
